Experience Assisted Living at its Finest at Welty Home Open House

The Welty Home in Wheeling will hold an open house from 1 – 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21, 2016 to give retirees an opportunity to experience the area’s premiere assisted living community. Visitors will be able to tour the building, enjoy refreshments including root beer floats, and talk with residents and staff about the advantages of living at Welty Home.

Located at 21 Washington Avenue in Wheeling, Welty Home offers gracious living for people who need a little assistance with personal care, medication management and other needs.  Residents enjoy 52 spacious private rooms with private baths, along with fresh-cooked meals served in a beautifully appointed dining room. Daily activities provide opportunities to interact with neighbors. Amenities include Wi-Fi connectivity, cable, exercise classes, and in-house therapy. Mass is celebrated daily in the Welty Home chapel, and nurses are on duty 24 hours a day to administer medications and assist with any issues that may arise.

Welty is part of a continuum of senior living options offered by the non-profit Welty Corporation to deliver the features that discerning seniors need and want. In addition to the Welty Home, the Welty Corporation operates 121 comfortable, maintenance-free apartments for seniors in the Clara Welty Apartments at 1276 National Road, Bertha Welty Apartments at 1315 National Road, Welty TownHomes at 1287 National Road, and Braddock Apartments at 153 Edgington Lane. These properties are designed for people who want to remain independent but appreciate the added measures of comfort and security of apartment living.

Welty Home Manager Tess Gaudino said Welty Home has completed extensive renovations over the past several years to improve the comfort, safety and well-being of residents. Each of Welty Home’s 52 private rooms and baths has been completely remodeled to make them more attractive, comfortable and energy-efficient. Walk-in showers with grab bars have been added, along with bathroom lights that come on automatically when someone enters the room.

New ceilings, energy-efficient lighting sconces, carpeting and paint complete the fresh new look of the rooms.  Wall safes make it easy for residents to secure their valuables, and in-room refrigerators enable them to keep their own drinks and snacks handy. Programmable digital thermostats let residents control the heating and cooling of their own rooms.

Welty’s dining room was completely rebuilt, with hardwood wainscoting, beautiful new tables and chairs, new carpet and window treatments. The new living room is designed to encourage socializing, with its comfortable new chairs and love seats, card tables, large windows and gas fireplace. The lower level activities room was refurbished with new bamboo floors, a large kitchen for baking and other resident activities, and plenty of open space for exercise classes, visiting entertainers, bingo games and other events. Even the private formal gardens were upgraded, with new plantings, benches, walkways and a covered patio.

Residents receive assistance with the tasks of daily living such as bathing, dressing and taking their medication. They enjoy three cooked meals daily plus snacks any time they like, transportation to and from medical appointments, housecleaning, laundry service and all apartment maintenance. Residents also have an active social life, Ms. Gaudino said. There are numerous activities, including daily Mass in the Welty Home chapel, and regular trips to parks, musical performances, shopping and sporting events.

AccuTech service is available to protect residents who have Alzheimer’s disease or another condition that causes them to wander. Door alarms warn staff if a resident with one of these illnesses tries to leave the building.

Ms. Gaudino encouraged people to come and see the quality of life at Welty Home. “Our residents tell us time and again how much they appreciate the kindness and caring of our staff,” she said. “We’re eager to show families what we have at Welty Home. It’s a special place.”  For more information, call Welty Home at 304.242.5233.
