General Information

General Information

Good Shepherd Nursing Home, LC provides quality long-term and skilled nursing care for residents in a comfortable environment with private and semi-private rooms. The caring and friendly staff work to promote the overall well-being of each resident.

Our wonderful Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses and Certified Nursing Assistants provide care around the clock, working closely with residents’ physicians to provide the best care possible.

Talented therapists provide Physical, Speech and Occupational Therapy to residents in need of rehabilitative and/or restorative services, and caring social workers are available to assist residents and their families.

Continuum of care

Good Shepherd is one component of a range of senior living options from independent apartments to assisted, skilled & nursing care. One exceptional advantage of offering a range of care is that those who are a part of the Welty family will have priority should their needs change and they require a place in another of Welty’s facilities.

Many of our residents made the transition from living in their own homes to life in the Clara or Bertha Welty Apartments or Braddock Apartments. When they needed some assistance with daily living they moved to the Welty Home, which offers private suites. And when they required skilled nursing care, it was an easy move to Good Shepherd.

Health Services

Residents enjoy the services of competent and caring staff. Good Shepherd has a staff of Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses and Certified Nurse Assistants on duty 24 hours a day. The staff works closely with individual residents’ physicians to provide the best care possible for each resident.

Specialists

Good Shepherd offers Physical, Speech and Occupational Therapy five days a week to residents in need of rehabilitative and/or restorative services. Staff social workers are available to assist residents and their families, and a full-time dietician works with our chefs to ensure that each resident receives the proper nutrition.

Many medical specialists visit Good Shepherd regularly to provide care for residents. Good Shepherd also transports residents at no charge to medical appointments, so residents can visit specialists as needed.

Good Shepherd Nursing Home is happy to accept Medicaid as well as private payment sources.

Pharmacy Services

Pharmacy services are provided through the WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital Pharmacy. Our fulltime staff pharmacist assists with medication management.

Residential Life

Religious Services

Our resident chaplain celebrates Holy Mass every day in our beautiful chapel. Unless the building is in quarantine, families and others are welcome to attend.

Schedule:

  • Sunday Mass – 11:45 a.m.
  • Daily Mass – 11:55 a.m.

Extraordinary Ministers of Communion take the Holy Eucharist to residents’ rooms every day beginning at 10:30 a.m. Anointing of the sick takes place quarterly, in January, April, July and October. Our Chaplain is available to visit with any resident and family member who desires to see him.

Protestant worship services are conducted by local ministers. The schedule varies, so check with Activities Staff if you wish to attend.

Activities

Activities are a vital part of daily life at Good Shepherd. Our great activities staff schedules daily activities such as bingo, painting, exercise classes and courtyard socials at which residents enjoy ice cream or other treats. Good Shepherd holds a candlelight dinner once a month, an elegant evening our residents always enjoy.

Residents who are able to travel are invited to attend Wheeling Nailers hockey games, Washington Wild Things baseball games and other sporting events. They also enjoy the fall foliage and spring flowers at Oglebay and Wheeling Parks, and regularly attend Music in the Park performances in Warwood and Wheeling. Our residents always look forward to seeing the Christmas displays at the Oglebay Festival of Lights.

Recreational materials are available for families to enjoy with residents. Games, music, movies, books, and magazines are available from the Activities Department, as are stationery, yarn and needles for knitting and crocheting.

Activities staff spend a great deal of time with our residents at scheduled activities and informally, enjoying conversations with residents during personal visits.

Families are always welcome to bring pets to visit our residents, if the pet owner bring the pet’s current vaccination records. Pet visits can be conducted only on the first floor in our activities room.

Private Events

Residents’ families may reserve the Activities Room for birthdays, anniversaries, and other private events. Beverage service, dishware and paper products can be provided free of charge to residents and their families, when an event is planned in the Activities Room between the hours of 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. on weekdays and 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on weekends.

Families may also reserve the Activities Room outside of these hours, provided they bring their own food, beverages, dishes, silverware and napkins.

Honors & Awards

Good Shepherd has earned a five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid services for more than a decade. Good Shepherd has held this rating without interruption since the 5-star rating system began. This rating is the highest awarded by Medicare and Medicaid; only seven of the 108 nursing facilities in West Virginia are five-star rated. There are no other five-star nursing homes in Wheeling.

Good Shepherd has been named a Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) Award winner for more than a decade. Good Shepherd is the only WV winner, and the only healthcare facility to be so honored. This federal award recognizes employers who operate healthy, safe workplaces.

And in our culinary department, chefs, cooks and supervisors have earned the highest standard of training and certification for the food service industry.
